Empty Subject Detection

Empty subject detection is designed to detect emails without a subject line.

This rule will only trigger based on email domains from Gmail free consumer domains, Microsoft free consumer domains, Yahoo free consumer domains. 

Any entries in the Safe Lists will be excluded from being quarantined.

If you would like to extend this rule to other domains you can do so by following the details below.

  1. Visit your USS Dashboard and click Products -> E-mail Security -> Custom Rule Data
  2. Click on New and select Rule RegEx
  3. Give your new Rule Data a sensible name, such as Empty Subject Lines
  4. Enter the RegEx value for an empty line: ^$
  1. Click on Save
  2. Click on New and select Rule Data
  3. Give the new Rule Data a sensible name, such as “Empty Subject Line – Matched Domains
  4. Add the example domain names from this text file to the above Rule Data and click Save
  5. Now navigate to Products -> E-mail Security -> Message Rules
  6. Click + to create a new rule
  7. Give your new Rule a sensible name, such as Empty Subject Detection
  8. Add a Direction Condition and set the Match to Inbound
  9. Add a Subject Condition, with the logic set to Match -> Empty Subject Lines (the Custom Rule Data you created in steps 3 & 4)
  10. Add a Sender Condition, with the logic set to Matches -> Empty Subject Line – Matched Domains (the Custom Rule Data you created in steps 7 & 8)
  11. Add a Add to Spam score action. Set the Value to 143
    This score will send the email to the Global Quarantine
    If you wish this to be quarantined for end users instead, set the spam score to 115
  12. Activate the rule by enabling the Active toggle
  13. Click Apply Changes
  1. Drag the rule up to a location above the Confirmed Spam rule within the Message Rules list
